People have many different definitions for a hero. Whether it'd be their father, mother, or someone with super powers. Ordinary or not, everyone could be a hero. A hero is someone who is willing to give up his own safety to do good for others. He is inspiring, courageous, and passionate. A hero is someone who has done great deeds for someone else, maybe a community, or even one person.

In Ancient times, people would tell stories to help explain what was inexplicable to them. Many times, warriors were seen as heroes because of their courage, strength, and physical fitness that made them appear to be more "hero" material than that of other men.
Examples: Beowulf; Monster Slayer. Leonidas; Lead 300 men to fight an army of thousands. Achilles; Greek hero of the Trojan War.

As these heroes showed courage and strength, a local mythological figure, Maui, was known for bringing the hawaiian islands into existence. According to legend, he used a fish hook to pull the whole island chain out of the sea. This legend was used as a way to possibly explain the origin of the islands.
